MONTEREY SELECT BOARD
MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF JUNE 26, 2006
The regular weekly meeting of the Monterey Select Board was opened at 8:30 a.m. with members Michael Storch (Chair), Jonathan Sylbert, and Wayne Burkhart all present.
In attendance for the meeting: Town Secretary Melissa Noe; Laurily Epstein of the Monterey News
· Stanley Ross, chair of the Board of Assessors, advised the board that the Assessors’ Clerk requires a new computer.
· The Board discussed the security of the Town Secretary office and the installation of an additional lock.
· The Board met with Building Commissioner Don Torrico to review building items.
· The Board discussed the question of direct deposit of Town employee paychecks with Town Secretary Melissa Noe. The Board will consult further with the Town Treasurer in this regard.
· The Board met with Chief Gareth Backhaus to review Police Department items. There was discussion of the Regional Emergency Planning Commission.
· The Board made the following Town Officer appointments for the period July 1, 2006, to June 30 of the year specified:

Representative (1 year)
· Fire Chief Ray Tryon advised the Board of overage in the Fire Department. The Board advised Tryon to seek the Finance Committee’s approval for the transfer of funds.
· State Representative Smitty Pignatelli visited the Select Board meeting to discuss several items of interest to the Board, as follows:
o Flood damage monies: The Board thanked Pignatelli for his efforts on the Town’s behalf in securing monies
o Status of state budget
o Berkshire Regional Planning Commission: Pensions for state employees; Berkshire County Retirement System
o Presentation: Pignatelli presented Judith Kales with a Citation from the Massachusetts House of Representatives, thanking her for 33 years of dedicated service to the Town
· At 10:30 a.m. a large group of Town officials and former Selectmen gathered for a reception honoring Judith Kales on the occasion of her retirement as Select Board Clerk. Several people offered personal tributes and remembrances; flowers and gifts

were presented to Kales; refreshments were served, and there was considerable reminiscing about the 33 years of Kales’ tenure.
· At 11:15 a.m. bids were opened for a new 17,500-gvw truck for the Highway Department. Present for the bid opening: Operations Director Maynard Forbes Three bids were received, as follows:
1. Motor Service Inc., Auburn, MA…………………….$40,264.16
2. Sales Masters, Troy, NY……………………………..$39,809.50
3. Richard Chevrolet……………………………………$36,898.00
The bid was not awarded, pending a recommendation from the Operations Director.
· The clerk was given instructions regarding correspondence.
· The Minutes of June 19, 2006, were approved as corrected.
· It was unanimously voted that the meeting be adjourned (12 p.m.).
